Spectrum Health Systems, Inc. Wins New Contract in Essex County, Massachusetts

Published On: September 23rd, 2019

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive continuum of evidence-based addiction treatment, was recently awarded a $2.7 million three-year contract by the Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Massachusetts.

Under this contract, Spectrum will operate a variety of programs for inmates and detainees under the County’s supervision, including an 80-bed residential treatment program at the Essex County House of Correction, two 28-day intensive treatment programs, specialized programming for women at the Women in Transition Center, outpatient treatment at three local community corrections centers and the Essex County Pre-release and Re-entry Center.

“The Essex County Sheriff’s Department offers a wide variety of treatment and educational programs,” said Sheriff Kevin F. Coppinger. “Some teach inmates how to overcome their reliance on drugs and alcohol, while others teach alternatives to violence and anger management. We also offer vocational education, GED and literacy programs. All are carefully designed to address the continuing care needs of each offender and to assure their successful return to the community.”

Spectrum’s Correctional Treatment Division was established in 1993 to provide specialized, individualized, trauma-informed treatment to offenders with a history of substance abuse and criminal behavior. Today, Spectrum operates a wide range of correctional treatment programs in prison and community-based settings throughout Massachusetts, Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia, serving more than 6,500 offenders and probationers each day.

“This drug epidemic falls squarely at the juncture of public safety and public health,” commented Senior Vice President of Correctional Services Christopher Petrozzi. “We appreciate being part of Sheriff Coppinger’s efforts to provide people with substance use disorders the opportunity to change their lives by participating in treatment while incarcerated and developing an individualized reentry plan for sustaining their recovery upon release.”

Spectrum’s leadership continues to pursue new program development opportunities across the country and welcomes inquiries from interested parties seeking effective treatment solutions.
