Spectrum Health Systems, Inc., a longtime not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive continuum of addiction treatment throughout Massachusetts, announces the appointment of James Celestin, MD, an expert in interventional pain management, to its Board of Trustees. Dr. Celestin holds certifications with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Medical Subspecialties, with a specialization in Pain Medicine.
“Dr. Celestin, a practicing interventional pain medicine physician with training in psychiatry, brings extensive knowledge in both mental health and substance use disorder treatment to our board,” said Kurt Isaacson, president and CEO of Spectrum Health Systems. “His experience and training will be invaluable as we continue to integrate a curriculum that focuses on treating the whole person, rather than fragments of their disease. Dr. Celestin has a medical perspective that is rare and will be a true asset to Spectrum.”
Dr. Celestin will provide strategic counsel and direction for the organization’s various inpatient and outpatient medical services. As a member of the American Psychiatric Association, American Pain Society (New England Chapter) and the American Medical Association, he’s well versed in the nuances of providing pain management to clients in active addiction and in early and long-term recovery.
“For people struggling with addiction, it’s important to have a holistic view of the person on a medical and personal level,” said Dr. Celestin. “Many opioid addictions begin with a prescription for pain medications following a traumatic event or surgery, for example. By understanding where their addiction started, we are better able to provide personalized treatment. Spectrum provides a comprehensive structure that allows us to place incoming clients in the most appropriate program for their stage of recovery.”
Dr. Celestin joins Spectrum’s board as an attending physician at Reliant Medical Group in Worcester, Mass. in the Department of Orthopedics and Reconstructive Surgery. At Reliant, he specializes in interventional spine and pain management and provides comprehensive pain care to patients.
Previously, Dr. Celestin worked in the Department of Pain Medicine at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston. Dr. Celestin completed his fellowship training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Department of Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School and his residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He is a graduate of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York City and Harvard University in Cambridge, MA.
