Khan is the latest addition to psychiatric branch, focusing on the intersection of substance use and mental health disorders

Spectrum Health Systems, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing a comprehensive continuum of addiction treatment throughout Massachusetts, today announces the appointment of Qaiser Khan, MD, MPH, to the organization’s growing psychiatry and behavioral health practice. Dually certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine, Dr. Khan will work alongside Dr. Roger Bayog to further expand upon Spectrum’s continuum of care, providing mental health therapy in conjunction with drug and alcohol addiction treatment.

Dr. Khan and Dr. Bayog’s coordinated efforts will help bridge the gap between hospital-based care and Spectrum’s outpatient psychiatric services and medication-assisted treatment.

“With extensive experience, research and published work in epidemiology, addiction and the treatment of substance use disorders, Dr. Khan is an extremely valuable addition to our organization,” said Sherry Ellis, COO of Spectrum Health Systems. “We believe that the co-occurring disorders of addiction and mental health should be treated together under the behavioral health umbrella, as each is affected by the other. Dr. Khan’s expertise in the administration of MAT will be crucial to our efforts in expanding treatment access across Massachusetts.”

From trauma informed care to pain management and more, Dr. Khan brings a wealth of knowledge in evidence-based treatment to underscore Spectrum’s approach to addiction therapy.

With academic and clinical experience in Pakistan and the United States, Dr. Khan has attended Punjab University; Allama Iqbal Medical College; the University of Oklahoma’s Health Sciences Center, Department of Psychiatry, Department of Anesthesiology and the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science. Most recently, Dr. Khan worked as a Fellow of Addiction Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Massachusetts. Along with his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, he holds certifications from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the University of Oklahoma.

“Despite the commendable growth of addiction treatment access in the State of Massachusetts, there are still many who fall through the cracks,” said Dr. Khan. “At Spectrum, I aim to continue building upon the great work being done within the organization by providing both addiction and psychiatric treatment together and ensuring that those in need are actually able to access the necessary resources.”
