An Inside Look: Residential Treatment with Spectrum Health Systems

Published On: January 4th, 2018Categories: Treatment & Recovery

At Spectrum Health Systems, we’re all about demystifying the road to recovery. So far, we’ve walked you through medication-assisted treatment, insurance coverage, clinical stabilization, and most recently, inpatient detoxification.

The next step in the process, following clinical stabilization, is residential treatment. Residential treatment, also known as rehab or inpatient treatment, is a live-in healthcare facility which provides an intensive level of care, therapy and educational groups for individuals with substance use disorders. Spectrum accepts a variety of insurance plans and receives funding from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) and Medicaid.

Admissions

Prior to arriving for residential treatment, our admissions team conducts an over-the-phone pre-screen for current mental health status, medical history, medications and last drug/alcohol usage so we can determine the best course of treatment – then comes the in-person medical screening and admission. Once admitted, new clients will have a urine toxicology screen and breathalyzer test to assess for safety and to obtain a baseline for comparison as a client progresses through treatment.

Depending on each client’s individual needs and insurance coverage, the length of stay in residential treatment varies, but typically it ranges up to three months. The longer the length of stay, the lesser the chance of relapse.

Getting Settled

After each client completes the pre-screen and medical evaluation, clients will be brought to their room and introduced to their peers and staff.

Clients may bring their own clothing and some toiletries in three-ounce clear containers, however DPH-funded programs provide toiletries and offer incentive activities for people to earn additional items. Electronics are kept secure by the program with the exception of non-WiFi capable mp3 players. Television is limited throughout the facility to eliminate distractions, allowing everyone to focus fully on recovery. If someone needs to make a call home or check in on work, supervised access to phones and laptops is permitted and some television time is allowed after 9:00 p.m.

With the permission of the residential client, our staff works with each client’s family, if they wish to be a part of the recovery process. Family engagement specialists identify positive role models and offer a support network for family members within the Family Renewal Program. For family and friends who wish to visit their loved one in treatment, it’s required that they attend educational sessions.

Daily Programming – Seven Days a Week

Once fully admitted to residential treatment, clients jump right into our daily programming. Each client is assigned to work with our clinical team, who helps create a personalized treatment plan with recovery goals, and a discharge plan for life after treatment – an essential part of sustained sobriety.

Clients start their day around 6:30 a.m. – 7:00 a.m., with breakfast and goal-setting. Spectrum has seven mandatory group sessions which clients attend each day. Group sessions address such topics as goal setting, health and wellness, life skills, recovery building, anger management, strategy, relapse prevention, and family dynamics. Clients also meet individually with members of our clinical team.

During free time, clients enjoy taking walks, journaling, playing cards or reading. In the evening, we have commitment speakers from both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.

Post-Treatment

For DPH clients, Spectrum offers scholarship programs which fund sober home rent and provide financial assistance while job searching. Many people entering our facilities have nowhere safe or healthy to live, and a sober home is a great way to transition from residential treatment back into the real world.

We strongly encourage all clients to continue some form of treatment, such as outpatient counseling or medication-assisted treatment. The longer a person is engaged in their recovery community, the higher the probability of continued success. Each client follows a different path once leaving our walls, but our staff is always available to provide continuing support as needed.
